Can you make a good cup of tea?

What can I do to help?
We need people who can make a good cup of tea and enjoy a natter! We are looking for people to make a real difference by visiting lonely older people or people with disabilities and help them feel less isolated.

What do I have to do?
Just donate a couple of hours a week to visit a client in their own home, chat to them and be a listening ear. We hope that you'll develop a mutual friendship and look forward to seeing each other. You would do the same things as you would with any other friend.

I haven't any experience, how can I help?
Many volunteers say that they haven't any experience but we are looking for people who are patient, have good listening skills and want to do the neighbourly thing by visiting someone who is isolated. We will provide free training to become a befriender and ongoing support for you including optional monthly get togethers with other volunteers. You will join a team of befrienders and be very much valued.

What happens if we don't get on?
Sometimes people don't get on and that's just life. Both clients and volunteers must not take it to heart. We will match you with someone else who we think is more suitable so please don't worry.

What you will not do...
You will not be providing personal care, cleaning, gardening or doing food shopping.

How do I get involved?
Contact the Befriending Co-ordinator at Voluntary Action Melton for a friendly chat.
